Almaty students against discrimination

March 1, 2024

On March 1, an event was held in Almaty, at the D. Kunaev Eurasian Law Academy, designed to raise awareness among young people about HIV prevention and the inadmissibility of stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV. The Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS in Almaty became the organizer of an important initiative.

Today, on the Day of "Zero Discrimination", young people and girls received important information about ways to diagnose and prevent HIV infection. Other relevant information was stories about people living with HIV. They are important to understand why stigma and discrimination are unacceptable.

On March 1, the day of "Zero Discrimination" is celebrated on the initiative of UNAIDS. This year's motto is "To protect everyone's health, protect everyone's rights." In 2024, Zero Discrimination Day is celebrated in the world for the tenth time. Protecting the rights of every human being is our common responsibility. We can end HIV if everyone's rights are protected.

Students at the event not only listened to a lecture and medical advice, but expressed a desire to find out their HIV status. To do this, rapid testing was conducted with pre- and post-test counseling, which was completed by 25 people.

- Everyone should think about their health, assess the risks for themselves and their loved ones. Regular HIV testing is primarily about taking care of one's own health," said Nurlan, who took an HIV test for the first time.

The specialists of the AIDS Center in Almaty stressed that HIV testing can be done free of charge and anonymously in any medical organization. The AIDS Center itself has all the conditions for obtaining reliable results on HIV testing and treatment – modern equipment, an accredited laboratory, and trained specialists. Qualified pre-test and post-test counseling is also conducted here, and a psychologist works.
