June 26, 2026

A regional seminar titled "Prevention of Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV" was held at the Regional HIV Prevention Center in Aktau. The event aimed to strengthen measures to prevent vertical transmission of HIV, protect maternal and child health, and enhance the professional knowledge and competencies of healthcare workers.

The seminar brought together obstetricians-gynecologists, pediatricians, and neonatologists from public healthcare organizations across the region. A total of 30 specialists participated in the event.

Among the attendees were Bibizada Duisenbayeva, Acting Head of the Mangystau Regional Health Department, and Berdibek Saraltayev, Director of the Regional HIV Prevention Center. In their remarks, they emphasized the importance of preventive efforts aimed at safeguarding the health of mothers and children.

As part of the program, participants received up-to-date information on the epidemiological situation of HIV infection in the Republic of Kazakhstan and the region, HIV testing of pregnant women, algorithms for preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, new clinical recommendations, and current approaches to laboratory diagnostics.

The seminar also provided a platform for healthcare professionals to exchange experiences and discuss issues related to HIV prevention, monitoring of pregnant women and newborns, early diagnosis, and the organization of medical care. Participants reviewed current challenges and explored practical solutions.

The participants highlighted the importance of strengthening intersectoral cooperation, improving preventive measures, and ensuring the effective implementation of clinical protocols to further reduce the risk of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.

During the seminar, the regional epidemiological situation was analyzed, and the effectiveness of ongoing preventive measures was assessed. According to specialists, timely HIV testing of pregnant women, early initiation of antiretroviral therapy, and enhanced medical monitoring significantly reduce the risk of HIV transmission to infants.

Notably, no cases of mother-to-child transmission of HIV have been registered in the Mangystauregion this year. This achievement demonstrates the effectiveness of the preventive measures being implemented and the coordinated efforts of healthcare organizations throughout the region. It also reflects the success of early HIV detection among pregnant women, comprehensive medical follow-up, and strict adherence to established clinical protocols.

The Regional HIV Prevention Center noted that educational events of this kind contribute to the continuous professional development of healthcare workers, the implementation of best practices, and the further improvement of maternal and child healthcare services.
