May 17 - World AIDS Remembrance Day

May 18, 2026

Every year, on the third Sunday of May, the world observes World AIDS Remembrance Day.

The main goal of this day is to honor the memory of those whose lives were lost to the epidemic, support people living with HIV, and draw public attention to prevention.

Remembrance Day is another opportunity to highlight the real importance of this issue and remind people that to protect themselves from HIV infection, it is necessary to follow simple rules of safe behavior and get tested for HIV promptly. Today, we know that thanks to the availability of antiretroviral therapy, it is possible to maintain quality of life with HIV by following doctors' recommendations and safe behavior rules. Early detection of the virus makes it possible to live a full life – work, start a family, and have healthy children.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of U=U (Undetectable = Untransmittable). This is a scientifically proven principle that a person with HIV who is taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) and has an undetectable viral load cannot transmit the virus sexually. U=U has become an international campaign.
