December 9, 2025

As part of World AIDS Day on December 1, a large-scale event was held at the Shymkent AIDS Center with the participation of representatives of non-governmental organizations and the media under the slogan “From challenges to transformations in the HIV response.”

Opening the event, the chief physician of the AIDS Center, B. Syrbek, emphasized how effectively changes are being achieved in overcoming HIV-related barriers. In his speech, he noted:
“Today we are making effective progress in addressing HIV issues. In particular, expanding access to antiretroviral therapy has led to a decrease in HIV-related morbidity and mortality. Therapy helps people living with HIV lead full, healthy lives and significantly improves patients’ quality of life. The activities we carry out allow timely detection of HIV infection in pregnant women and, in many cases, prevent vertical transmission. To date, 620 healthy children have been born to women living with HIV in Shymkent. Also, ongoing information and educational work among youth is aimed at the health of future generations and HIV prevention.”

During the event, information was presented on the HIV situation in Shymkent, on activities conducted in connection with World AIDS Day, as well as on cooperation with the Youth Health Center. Media representatives were briefed on UNAIDS terminology used in covering HIV-related topics.

A knowledge test on HIV was conducted among journalists, during which they demonstrated their level of awareness of the infection. They were shown terms that stigmatize key populations and the correct terminology to be used when reporting on HIV issues.

The event concluded with the ceremonial opening of the “Alley of Life.”
The ribbon-cutting of the marble plaque of the Alley was performed by honored journalist of Kazakhstan S. Zheksenbaev and project coordinator of the “Ai-ana” public association S. Shiryaev, while invited guests, partners, and specialists from the AIDS Center planted seven pine trees.

The opening of the “Alley of Life” was carried out on the initiative of the AIDS Center administration, with the support of the “Ai-ana” public association and funding from the Global Fund.

Deputy Chief Physician for Quality Control of Medical Services A. Medetova noted:
“Each tree we plant is not just a green corner. The pine has special meaning. It is a symbol of endurance, longevity, continuity, and renewal of life. This tree, which remains green even in winter, will be a symbol of hope and stability for our Alley. It signifies that life goes on despite difficulties and symbolizes the strength of the human spirit.”
