Problems of late detection of HIV

November 29, 2023

The problems of late detection of HIV infection were discussed on November 29 by participants in the city conference. The organizer of the event within the framework of the World Campaign under the motto “Leadership to Communities” is the Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS in Almaty with the participation of ICAP.The purpose of the conference: to attract the attention of specialists from primary health care organizations to the problems of late detection of HIV and to increase the number of HIV tests on the initiative of a medical worker.

Expert doctors at the AIDS Center noted that late detection of HIV remains a pressing problem in many countries. People who live unaware of their status waste valuable time. After all, during this period, HIV can seriously harm a person’s health. It is not uncommon for HIV to be detected even after serious health problems, for example, when herpes, tuberculosis, hepatitis C, oncology and other concomitant diseases have already made themselves felt, or a person is preparing for surgery.People over 55 deserve special attention. Elderly patients live with HIV for a long time without knowing it. At the same time, they may suffer from a number of chronic diseases, and doctors sometimes do not even think of testing them for HIV.
Doctors reviewed individual clinical cases from the practice of the AIDS Center. The topics of problems in diagnosing tuberculosis in HIV infection and clinical indications for HIV testing were discussed in detail.
To avoid HIV at any age you need to:- use condoms and, if necessary, HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP);
- in case of unprotected risky contact within 72 hours, resort to HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP);
- regularly undergo HIV testing, regardless of marital status or number of partners;
- for pregnant and lactating women - test yourself and your sexual partner.
