Training for web outreach workers and consultants

On October 11-13, web outreach workers and consultants from different regions of the country discussed topical issues of HIV prevention, treatment, care and support for people using new synthetic drugs in Almaty.

The training was organized as part of a grant from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in partnership with UNODC.

UNODC international consultant trainers A. Lakhov and N. Unguryan familiarized the participants with the data on new synthetic drugs (NSD) in the country and the EECA region, discussed recommendations on harm reduction and self-control.

The focus of the training was on topical issues of harm reduction, prevention and treatment of overdoses, community mobilization among people who use NSAIDs.

Participants received detailed information with the results and conclusions of a pilot study to assess the needs and availability of HIV prevention and treatment services for people using new psychoactive substances in Kazakhstan.

Of particular interest was the topic - the situation with HIV among key population groups and people who use NSAIDs. The risks of HIV infection were noted. Thus, according to UNAIDS: the risk of infection in people who inject drugs is 35 times higher than in people who do not do such injections.
