Research on stigma and discrimination

At the webinar "Vaccination against coronavirus infection and stigma issues" on June 9, the results of studies related to stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV (PLHIV) were presented at the CNDDIZ.

A study devoted to the study of vaccination against COVID-19 among PLHIV, as well as issues of stigma and discrimination against HIV among employees of medical organizations and PLHIV themselves, and the relationship of these phenomena is carried out by the Center for Scientific and Practical Initiatives under a grant from the Fogarty International Center USA. In the course of this study, a survey was conducted among 196 PLHIV and 193 employees of AIDS centers on vaccination against COVID-19 and stigma.

The webinar also discussed the results of a research within the framework of a doctoral dissertation on HIV-related stigma, which was attended by 448 medical workers from 8 polyclinics in Almaty.

The participants noted that the research results can be useful for a better understanding of the causes, prevalence and impact of stigma at various levels of medical care for PLHIV, as well as for the development of effective interventions to reduce HIV-associated stigma in healthcare, to improve HIV prevention, diagnosis and treatment in the country.
