May 25, 2023

At a meeting on May 25 in the KNCDIZ of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, measures were discussed to include in the plan for expanding pre-contact (PREP) prevention, taking into account international recommendations to reduce new HIV cases in Kazakhstan.

The meeting was opened by B. Bayserkin, the director of the KNCDIZ, who noted that "today PREP is a key component in combined HIV prevention. PREP is included in the clinical protocol "HIV infection in adults" in accordance with the latest WHO recommendations and is fully provided at the expense of the state. To expand it, it is necessary to consolidate the efforts of the community, international and non-governmental organizations."

In the country, PREP is provided to all key groups. Today, 1112 people use the service:

-594 - MSM,

-131 - sex workers,

-175 - people who use drugs,

-7 – trans persons,

-205 - discordant couples.

Most of all, PREP is in demand in Almaty, Karaganda and Kostanay regions.

The review of international recommendations and the situation on PREP issues was presented to the participants by Diana Stanachev of the CDC. She stressed that by the end of 2022, PREP is used in 93 countries around the world.
