On February 23, the Pavlodar AIDS Center hosted a seminar on TB diagnosis in people living with HIV for doctors responsible for HIV prevention in medical institutions.
Elena Golovchenko, a TB doctor at the AIDS Center, highlighted an important aspect in her presentation: in 2022, the number of patients diagnosed with TB in the context of HIV infection decreased by 29%. This was possible due to the coverage of patients with antiretroviral therapy, and the timely procurement of isoniazid also led to a decrease in the incidence of pulmonary tuberculosis.
There is no difference in the diagnosis of tuberculosis in people living with HIV and in healthy individuals. The difficulty in diagnosing TB in patients with HIV is the presence of secondary diseases, which can mask the clinical picture. The speaker discussed with the participants what doctors should pay attention to: TB develops in patients who refuse antiretroviral therapy for a long time and do not undergo timely medical check-ups and X-ray examinations.
