Important update on the Compulsory Social Health Insurance (CSHI) starting in 2026

Beginning 1 January 2026, the CSHI benefit package will expand to include coverage for a wider range of chronic diseases ????

Conditions newly covered under CSHI:

  • diabetes mellitus

  • cerebral palsy

  • rheumatic diseases

  • systemic connective tissue disorders

With this update, CSHI will cover most chronic diseases, except for 11 socially significant conditions that remain funded under the Guaranteed Volume of Free Medical Care (GVFMC):

  • tuberculosis

  • HIV

  • cancer

  • chronic hepatitis and liver cirrhosis

  • mental disorders

  • rare (orphan) diseases

  • degenerative diseases of the nervous system

  • demyelinating diseases of the central nervous system

  • epilepsy

  • acute myocardial infarction (for the first 6 months)

  • stroke (within one year)

All insured people will continue to have access to:
— treatment
— medical consultations
— essential medicines

More than 12 million people are already included in preferential categories whose insurance contributions are paid by the state.
Starting in 2026, approximately 1 million more people in difficult life circumstances will be insured at the expense of local executive authorities.
