The Earlier, the Better: Mobile HIV Testing Campaigns in Almaty Region Districts

November 27, 2025

On 25–26 November 2025, specialists from the Almaty Regional AIDS Centre conducted “Open Day” outreach events in the villages of Kosozhen and Karoy in Ili district, as well as in the adult outpatient clinic of the Talgar District Central Hospital. The activities were held as part of the campaign dedicated to World AIDS Day.

The campaign involved a general practitioner, a narcologist and specialists from the youth health centre. Visitors received consultations on HIV prevention and prevention of sexually transmitted infections.

The main goal of these events was to raise public awareness about HIV, its modes of transmission and protection methods, and to promote early testing and timely treatment. Early diagnosis allows people to start treatment promptly, maintain their health, prevent complications and stop onward transmission of the virus. Antiretroviral therapy makes the virus undetectable—and therefore untransmittable.

Residents showed strong interest, actively participated in discussions, received individual counselling and up-to-date information materials. A rapid HIV testing area was set up for everyone willing to be tested, with brochures and leaflets distributed on site.

Results: In Ili district, 46 people were tested using rapid tests, and 82 people were reached with information. In Talgar district, 280 people were reached, including 98 who took rapid tests. Over 50 information materials were distributed.

The outreach events contributed to improving public awareness and strengthening safe behaviour skills, reminding everyone that regular and timely HIV testing is an essential step in protecting one’s own health and that of loved ones.
