Realize the right to health

April 5, 2024

Every year, on the seventh of April, World Health Day is celebrated around the world. In 2024, the theme of the memorial date is “My health is my right,” according to the official website of the World Health Organization.

This year's theme aims to promote the right of every person, wherever they are, to quality health care, education and information, as well as to safe drinking water, clean air, adequate nutrition, quality housing, decent working conditions, environmental conditions and freedom from discrimination.

An important aspect in the provision of medical services is their accessibility for everyone, regardless of gender, age, social status, sexual orientation and other characteristics.

Everyone knows that HIV can affect anyone today. You can verify this by writing a query in any search engine “famous people living with HIV.” However, one should not deny the fact that there are groups that are most at risk of contracting HIV infection.

They are usually called key populations, which include: people who inject drugs, sex workers, men who have sex with men.

In the context of the theme of World Health Day, it is very important to provide a tolerant and supportive environment for all groups of the population, where there is no place for stereotypes and prejudices, discrimination and infringement of rights. Only in this way will we achieve that every person will be able to realize their right to health, including receiving services to prevent HIV infection.

By the way, in the Akmola region over the past year, over 1,300 people from key population groups received medical services through the harm reduction program, and 41 clients received pre-exposure prophylaxis, which makes it possible to prevent HIV infection by taking special medications before a potential risk.
