In the Almaty region, for 9 months of 2024, the coverage of antiretroviral therapy (hereinafter - ART) was increased and the effectiveness of ART for 9 months of 2024 was 91% (2023 - 87%). The main goal of antiretroviral therapy is to reduce the amount of virus in the blood and restore the immune system. The effectiveness of treatment leads to the disappearance of symptoms and allows people to live full and healthy lives. People with HIV who take ART do not transmit the virus to their sexual partners, which allows the person to live a full life. Thanks to the achievement of treatment, the incidence of diseases associated with immunodeficiency and mortality from HIV infection have decreased. In Kazakhstan, ART is provided free of charge as part of the guaranteed volume of free medical care.
Based on the results of 9 months of 2024, 247 new cases of HIV infection were registered among citizens of the Republic of Kazakhstan. Among the registered cases of HIV, the highest percentage of detection was noted in the age group of 30-49 years - 62.8%, the main route of transmission is sexual - 78.5%. Pregnant women registered at the antenatal clinic were tested for HIV - 100%, sexual partners of pregnant women - 96.7%. All pregnant women and children born to women living with HIV are 100% provided with the prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV.
Coverage of key population groups (people who inject drugs, sex workers and men who have sex with men) with pre-exposure prophylaxis increased over 9 months of 2024 - 12.7% (2023 - 4.6%).
To raise public awareness, 376 information and educational components were held (seminars, forums, round tables, promotions, open days). The work of social networks has intensified, a section on real stories from the lives of people living with HIV has been introduced, and live broadcasts and videos in the form of mini-films have been conducted.
World AIDS Day is celebrated on December 1st every year. People around the world are uniting to show support for people living with HIV and remember those who have died from AIDS-related illnesses.
World AIDS Day always has a specific theme. This year the slogan will be “Choose the right path – the path of human rights.” This theme complements the list of goals that World AIDS Day sets on a global scale. First celebrated in 1988, World AIDS Day was the first international day dedicated to global health.
