Presentation of the study on NPS

On August 23, the National round table on the clinical and epidemiological study of the prevalence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) was held online in Almaty.

This study was initiated by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, as part of a grant agreement.

The event was supported by ISSUP - International Society of Substance Use Prevention Specialists.

The round table was attended by specialists from the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the RSE on REM "Kazakh Scientific Center for Dermatology and Infectious Diseases" of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Kazakhstan, representatives of UNODC, CADAP, ISSUP, UNAIDS, the WHO Country Office in Kazakhstan, as well as other international and non-governmental organizations, leaders and specialists of the regional Mental Health Centers and RNPCHP.

Participants noted that the widespread use of synthetic drugs, as well as the use of the Internet to distribute them, is becoming a global problem. According to the latest UN data, about 500 new psychoactive substances are registered in the world, of which more than 60 are in Kazakhstan and neighboring states of the region.

The results of the conducted in 2021-2022 clinical and epidemiological studies have shown the current "drug scene" in all regions of Kazakhstan, the dynamics of changes in consumption patterns, as well as potential risks of an increase in the number of addictions among the young, working population of the republic. In close connection with the growth in the injecting use of NPS, the data of sentinel epidemiological surveillance of the situation with HIV infection in the Republic of Kazakhstan were announced.

Now the organizers are preparing recommendations based on the results of the collective dialogue of the participants.
