STI Prevention Day

February 18 is the Day for the Prevention of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs).

According to the World Health Organization, more than 1 million cases of STIs are registered daily in the world. To date, about 30 diseases are known that can be sexually transmitted. Most STIs, such as gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomoniasis, are successfully cured with timely access to a doctor.

STIs can have serious health consequences. They can become the main causes of inflammatory diseases of the pelvic organs, internal organs, adverse pregnancy outcomes and infertility, prematurity and birth defects.

In 2019, in Kazakhstan, to improve the situation, clinical protocols for syphilis, chlamydial and gonococcal infections were updated in accordance with international recommendations.In 2021, the Standard for organizing medical care for patients with STIs was developed in accordance with the Code of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated July 7, 2020 “On the health of the people and the healthcare system”. The document establishes the rules, general principles and characteristics of the organization of dermatovenerological medical care for patients with dermatological diseases and STIs, at the PHC level, outpatient, inpatient and inpatient replacement levels.There are some simple rules and tips on how to reduce the risk and even avoid the risk of STI infection:- Refrain from "casual" connections.- Use protective equipment (condom) during sexual intercourse.- Follow the rules of personal hygiene in intimate life.- Change your sexual behavior to a safe one.
