Know how to protect yourself from HIV
Know how to protect yourself from HIV
On May 13, students of the Almaty College of Technology learned a lot of new and useful things about HIV prevention. A lecture on transmission routes and ways to protect against HIV for students was given by specialists of the Center for the Prevention and Control of AIDS in Almaty. The event is organized as part of the Reproductive Health Week. HIV prevention begins with awareness. Knowledge helps young people to take an informed approach to their health and safety issues. One of the most effective methods of HIV and STI prevention is the use of condoms during every sexual encounter. Regular testing for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections is also important. - Special attention in prevention is paid to countering stigma and discrimination against people affected by HIV. An open and respectful attitude helps people not to be afraid to find out their status, seek help and start treatment in a timely manner, if necessary," says Ansagul Derbisalieva, a social worker at the AIDS Center in Almaty. At the event, everyone could find out their HIV status. The doctors conducted an express test, and after 20 minutes you could find out your result. Psychosocial counseling was conducted with all those who passed the test. The incidence of HIV in Akmola region has decreased by almost one and a half times
The incidence of HIV in Akmola region has decreased by almost one and a half times
This year, for the 42nd time, the world will celebrate the World Day of Remembrance of People Who Died of AIDS, which falls annually on the third Sunday in May. In 2025, this date falls on the 18th. This day is not only an occasion to remember those who died due to illness, but also a reminder of the importance of solidarity, prevention and overcoming the stigma associated with HIV. In four months of 2025, 37 new cases of infection were detected in the Akmola region. This is 11 fewer cases than in the same period last year, which is a decrease of 23%. In terms of morbidity, there is a decrease of 1.4 times. This was announced by the medical staff of the Regional HIV Prevention Center at a briefing in the Regional Communications Service, which was held on May 12. It is worth noting that at the beginning of the month, more than 50,000 people had been tested for HIV, an indicator comparable to the level of last year. Special attention should be paid: As before, the majority of new cases are related to unprotected sexual intercourse. On average, nine out of ten become sexually infected. "On the Day of Remembrance of People who died of AIDS, I would like not only to honor the memory of those whose lives were claimed by this infection, but also to draw the attention of society to people living with HIV. Thanks to modern antiretroviral therapy, we have learned how to control the virus and improve the quality of life of our patients. However, the quality of life is determined not only by the physiological parameters of health, but also by the psychological state. Therefore, it is extremely important to continue the course towards the formation of an informed and tolerant society," said the acting Nurlan Akhilbekov, Chief Physician of the Regional HIV Prevention Center. To this end, the center carries out preventive work in two directions: among the general population and key groups. Social advertising tools, information campaigns and rapid testing campaigns in public places are actively used. HIV infection prevention among key groups is implemented through the Harm Reduction program. According to Balgyn Sarbasova, head of the center's prevention department, all these measures make it possible to maintain a stable epidemiological situation in the region, raise public awareness, and reduce stigmatization and discrimination in society towards people living with HIV. Various events dedicated to the World Day of Remembrance of People who Died of AIDS are scheduled to be held in Akmola region from May 12 to 16. Among them are performances by the center's doctors on local television, information campaigns with the opportunity to take an express HIV test, as well as the active participation of the media and social networks in drawing public attention to issues of safe sexual behavior and the formation of a society free from discrimination against people living with HIV. In conclusion, the center's doctors called for simple preventive measures, namely: not to engage in early sexual intercourse, remain faithful to one sexual partner, and use a condom during any type of sexual contact — whether oral, vaginal, or anal sex. And also pay special attention to the issues of sex education in the family. more »
